Students staged a protest outside MVSR Engineering College in Nadargul after a student named Soni died following a Dandiya event on the campus. Thirteen other students were hospitalized after the programme.
The protesters demanded safer conditions at college events and accountability from the authorities. They gathered outside the college to press for answers over the incident.
T Nagaraju, State Secretary of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) in Telangana, questioned why the government and the police did not ensure safety when they gave permission for the event.
Nagaraju also criticized engineering colleges for holding cultural festivals mainly to make money. He mentioned events at Malla Reddy College and programmes featuring Preethi Reddy and Sreeleela.
He pointed out that the police often do not check whether such events have proper permissions and safety measures in place. The SFI said educational institutions should not hold large events without strict oversight.
The SFI also expressed concern over the rising drug use among students. It urged the police to be more careful and to reconsider permissions for events held on college campuses.
