An elderly woman in Andhra Pradesh’s Kurnool district cremated her husband’s body at their home. The woman, named Lalita, had been the sole caregiver for her husband, who had been paralyzed since 2016. Before his illness, he operated a medical shop which was their source of income. After his ailment, the couple faced financial challenges. They had two sons, one employed at a private hospital in Kurnool and the other settled in Canada.

Lalita did not inform any relatives when her husband passed away and decided to cremate him at home as she believed she would not receive any assistance for the cremation. She used old clothes and books for the cremation process and even informed her son about the incident through a video call. Concerned neighbors noticed smoke coming from the house and alerted the police. Upon arrival, Lalita revealed that she had conducted the final rites of her husband within their home.

The police have registered a case and are investigating the incident. Reports suggesting that Lalita’s decision to cremate her husband at home stemmed from her apprehension that informing her sons would lead to property disputes were refuted by the police.
