Hyderabad: Chief Minister Revanth Reddy voiced deep concerns about the decline in journalism’s trustworthiness. He warned that without restoring media credibility, the nation’s security could be at risk.
At a Telugu daily’s anniversary on Friday, he highlighted that only a few media outlets uphold journalistic ethics and serve the public. He criticized politically-affiliated media for compromising the profession, misusing their influence to serve political and financial interests through unethical means.
Revanth Reddy observed a troubling shift: previously, politicians gained insights from journalists at press conferences. Now, the opposite occurs, and this change is alarming. He accused some political parties of damaging journalism’s noble reputation for their selfish goals.
He reminisced about the press’s vital role during the freedom struggle, especially newspapers linked to Communist parties, which raised awareness about social issues and supported the farmers’ armed struggle in Telangana. He commended Nava Telangana for maintaining this tradition.
Expressing unease over media overstepping boundaries, he noted that political party-run newspapers used to share their ideologies with the public. Now, these dailies prioritize financial gains and mistakes. He urged citizens to scrutinize the hidden intentions of politically-owned newspapers.
The Chief Minister also raised concerns about social media misuse by those lacking journalistic knowledge, alleging they aim to disrupt the system. He claimed that both political parties and journalists are losing integrity and called for a ‘Lakshman Rekha’ to ensure trustworthy journalism.
Revanth Reddy mentioned that Communist parties have historically supported Congress, including in the 2023 State Assembly elections. He assured that the alliance between Congress and Left parties will persist, focusing on state development and public welfare.
