Hyderabad: The State Home department has given the CBI authority to investigate within the state. Special Chief Secretary Gupta issued the notification, allowing the Central Bureau of Investigation to handle cases involving both public officials and private individuals, including companies. The CBI has confirmed they received the state’s request to start investigations.
The state has approved the CBI to look into allegations of corruption and misuse of public funds in the construction of the Medigadda, Annaram, and Sundilla barrages, part of the Kaleshwaram project.
Previously, the BRS government had revoked general consent for the CBI to operate in Telangana. This was a reversal of permissions under Section 6 of the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act, 1946, which outlines the CBI‘s authority.
The decision to involve the CBI came shortly after a lengthy discussion in the Legislative Assembly about the findings of the Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose Commission. Given the complexity of the situation, which involved various Central Public Sector Undertakings (CPSUs), it was deemed necessary for the CBI to lead the inquiry.
On October 24, 2023, the NDSA committee inspected the Medigadda Barrage and reported to the Telangana government on November 1, 2023. The National Dam Safety Authority provided two more reports: an interim one on April 1, 2024, and a final report on April 24, 2025. These reports identified several issues, including problems with planning, design, quality control, and construction, leading to the barrage’s failure.
