Hyderabad experienced severe rainfall impacting daily life, especially on Saturday. Evening commuters faced difficulties due to waterlogged roads, leading to traffic jams, particularly in the IT corridor. In Padmarao Nagar and Nallakunta, the collapse of nala-retaining walls prompted authorities to evacuate residents to safer areas.
Heavy rain hit areas like Kapra, Malkajgiri, and Uppal. The GHMC office in Kapra recorded the highest rainfall at 77.8 mm, followed by Prasanth Nagar in Malkajgiri and Rajiv Nagar in Uppal with 68.5 mm. Moderate rain affected regions such as Secunderabad, Hayatnagar, Uppal, Begumpet, Quthbullapur, Musheerabad, and Alwal.
The Indian Meteorological Department issued a yellow alert for the next week for Rangareddy, Hyderabad, and Medchal-Malkajgiri districts.
In Padmarao Nagar, evacuees demanded the reconstruction of the retaining wall to prevent further damage to buildings. Meanwhile, Patny Nagar residents confronted SCB CEO D Madhukar during his visit after the area flooded due to a previous wall demolition by HYDRAA. Special monsoon teams evacuated some families on Friday night.
Traffic was heavily disrupted in areas with intense rainfall and low-lying regions faced waterlogging and flooding. GHMC identified about 140 waterlogged zones, including 24 severely affected areas.
HYDRAA officials remained active on the ground, providing toll-free numbers for assistance. Mayor Gadwala Vijaylaxmi conducted teleconferences with officials, emphasizing vigilance and readiness.
In response to the heavy rains, Hyderabad’s in-charge minister Ponnam Prabhakar urged authorities to stay alert, ensuring that relief efforts are swift and effective. He also called on Congress workers to assist those in need.
