The government of Telangana has announced that they will open one de-addiction centre in each of their 33 districts. These centres will help treat people who are addicted to alcohol or drugs. The treatment will include counselling services, yoga therapy, and free treatment to help people resist relapsing into drug abuse.

Earlier this year, the government announced the opening of new drug de-addiction centres in the state. This came after criticism from the Telangana High Court, which had questioned why the government had taken six years to respond to requests for these centres.

Before the government’s announcement, Andhra Pradesh had already opened 18 de-addiction centres in their 13 districts, while Telangana had not opened any. In 2016, a social activist named Mamidi Venu Madhav filed a Public Interest Litigation in court, asking the state to open de-addiction centres in all districts. The state administration did not respond to the petition despite numerous adjournments.
