Elon Musk has stated in an interview with BBC that he would like to give full freedom to users to post anything on Twitter, but this is not possible in India due to the country’s strict social media rules. Musk explained that if Twitter does not comply with these rules, its employees in India could end up in jail. Musk did not elaborate on the specific laws he was referring to, but he mentioned that a two-part series questioning then-Gujarat CM Modi’s role in the 2002 Gujarat riots has been banned by the Indian government. Although Musk talks about upholding free speech, Twitter has censored and blocked content on several occasions since he acquired the platform in October 2020.
