Hyderabad: Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy extended warm wishes to the people of Peru on their 204th Independence Day. He attended a celebration in Delhi on Thursday as the chief guest.
Kishan Reddy highlighted the strong friendship between India and Peru, which began in 1963. In recent years, this bond has grown stronger. Both nations share a commitment to democratic values and have common views on international issues. He praised their collaborative work in promoting unity among South American countries.
Peru is a leading trading partner in South America for India. Their trade ties are growing each year. This partnership includes cultural exchanges, fostering friendship between their people. Notably, bilateral trade has reached $6 million.
Efforts are underway to finalize a free trade agreement to further enhance economic ties, with discussions ongoing. As the world moves towards sustainable development, India and Peru aim to grow in this area together. Peru’s abundant minerals, such as gold, silver, and copper, will aid India’s eco-friendly energy goals.
Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s guidance, India launched the National Critical Minerals Mission to become self-reliant in minerals. In March 2025, an agreement was signed between the Geological Survey of India and Peru’s Instituto Geológico Minero y Metallúrgico (INGEMMET).
Opportunities for cooperation also exist in space research, IT, renewable energy, medicine, and agriculture. Indian mining officials will join the ‘Perumin-2025’ program in Arequipa, Peru, this September. The International Potato Centre plans to open its South Asia office in Agra, strengthening agricultural ties. This center will benefit Indian farmers and boost agricultural research. Kishan Reddy thanked Peru for hosting International Yoga Day at iconic sites like Machu Picchu and the Coricancha Temple.
