The Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Delhi filed their nominations for the upcoming mayoral elections on April 26. The AAP party is confident that its candidates, Shelly Oberoi and Aaley Mohammad Iqbal, will win. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi elects a new mayor every year. The post of the mayor is rotated every five years, and the first year is reserved for women. The AAP won the civic polls last year, despite the opposition BJP’s attempts to disrupt the voting process. The BJP held a protest near the Delhi Assembly, demanding Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s resignation over an alleged excise policy scam. Kejriwal was questioned for nearly nine hours by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) as a witness in the case, and he maintains that the case is false and a result of dirty politics. Kejriwal’s former deputy Manish Sisodia was arrested by the CBI in February.
