Centre reports 9.79 lakh job vacancies with maximum of 2.93 lakh in Railways

According to Union Minister of State for Personnel Jitendra Singh, there are currently over 9.79 lakh vacancies in various central government departments, with the highest number of vacancies being in railways at 2.93 lakh. The filling up of these vacancies is an ongoing process as per the requirements of different ministries, departments, and organizations within the central government. The government has already issued instructions to ensure timely filling up of these vacant positions, and Rozgar melas are being organized to further promote employment generation. Other departments with significant vacancies include defence (civil), home, posts, revenue, Indian audit and accounts department, and atomic energy department.

In other news, Union Minister of State for Home Ajay Kumar Mishra informed Rajya Sabha that as of December 31, 2021, 472 prisoners across the country were sentenced to death and awaiting further action. The death sentence of 290 other prisoners has been commuted to life imprisonment. Uttar Pradesh had the highest number of convicts (67) who were awarded the death penalty, followed by Bihar, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Karnataka.

Additionally, according to the Ministry of Education, over 19,000 students from OBC, SC, and ST categories dropped out from central universities, IITs, and IIMs between 2018-2023. The highest number of dropouts occurred in central universities at 14,446, followed by IITs at 4,444 and IIMs at 366. Union Minister of State for Education Subhas Sarkar provided this data in response to a written question in Rajya Sabha.
