In the Balasore train accident, the rescue operation is finished, and injured passengers have been taken to different hospitals. However, identifying the dead bodies is a major challenge for the Odisha government. Some bodies have not been claimed, while others have had more than one family claim them. The officials have said that identifying the bodies has been difficult because of their bad condition.

There are 123 bodies in the mortuary of AIIMS Bhubaneswar and 70 others in the mortuaries of Capital Hospital, Sum Hospital, Amri Hospital, KIMS Hospital, and Hi-Tech hospital in Bhubaneswar. Some bodies have been hard to identify because their faces are not recognizable, so DNA tests need to be done.
