The Trinamool Congress party, led by Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, recently held a protest in Kolkata against the BJP-led central government. During the protest, an oversized washing machine labelled “BJP” became the centre of attention as Banerjee symbolically “turned white” cloth black to represent corrupt leaders being exonerated when they join the BJP. Trinamool workers shouted slogans, calling the BJP a washing machine for corrupt politicians.

Banerjee accused the BJP of becoming a washing machine and sheltering thieves and robbers. She demanded a list of corrupt politicians who have joined the BJP and accused them of giving sermons about the constitution. Banerjee launched a two-day sit-in protest against the central government and said she had every right to hold a dharna. She even threatened to sit on a dharna at the Prime Minister’s house if necessary.

The Trinamool Congress is protesting against the Centre and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not disbursing funds to West Bengal. The protests have escalated ahead of the local body elections in the state and the 2024 general election.

During the protest, Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee also attacked Prime Minister Modi and Bengal’s Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari. He used the issue of Rahul Gandhi’s ouster from the Lok Sabha to pivot his attacks against Modi and Adhikari. He demanded similar punishments for Modi and Adhikari for allegedly committing the same offence as Gandhi.

Banerjee addressed an impressive gathering less than a kilometer away from where Mamata Banerjee was holding her two-day dharna to protest alleged “discrimination” by the Centre against Bengal. He questioned why the Prime Minister should not be disqualified from Parliament for hurting the sentiments of all women when he made sarcastic and derogatory statements against the entire women community.
