Mamata launches new attack on Centre, questioning if CBI will invade bathrooms

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday once again attacked the Union government over the daylong raids at different municipalities in the state as part of the ongoing probe into the alleged recruitment scam in the municipalities, asking if the central agencies will now barge into people's washrooms.

Former anti-narcotics officer Sameer Wankhede has been called by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to their Mumbai office for questioning about a corruption case. Wankhede was in charge of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in Mumbai when he arrested Aryan Khan, the son of actor Shah Rukh Khan, two years ago in an alleged drug bust on a cruise ship off the coast of Mumbai.

Wankhede and others are accused of demanding a bribe of ₹25 crore to not frame Aryan Khan in the case. However, in May 2022, the anti-drugs agency cleared Aryan Khan of all charges due to a lack of sufficient evidence. The SIT set up by the agency claimed that Mr Wankhede’s investigation had lapses.

Last year, Wankhede was transferred to the Directorate General of Taxpayer Services in Chennai.
