Visitor Shoots Woman at Gurudwara for Allegedly Drinking Alcohol on Premises Resulting in Her Death

A woman named Parwinder Kaur was shot and killed on Sunday while allegedly drinking near the holy pond of a gurdwara called Dukh Niwaran Sahib in India. The accused, Nirmaljit Singh Saini, claimed that he did it because his religious feelings were offended. Saini is a property dealer with no criminal history who expressed outrage over recent sacrilegious occurrences to gurdwara officials.

According to the police, Saini fired five shots at Kaur with his licensed revolver, hitting her three times. Another man was also injured by his bullet and is receiving treatment in the hospital. The police say that Saini surrendered to them and handed over his weapon.

Kaur’s possessions included a prescription sheet for a local de-addiction facility, indicating that she was getting treatment for alcoholism. The police were unable to determine where she lived or if she had any family members.

The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) representatives said that Saini shot at Kaur as she and police officers exited the gurdwara manager’s room. Kaur had been taken there by the sangat after they observed her drinking near the holy pond.

The police are still investigating the incident and have not yet determined where Kaur came from or why she was drinking near the gurdwara.
