Police Commissioner V. C. Sajjanar had earlier announced a firm stand against drunk driving, with intensified checks conducted at more than 100 locations. Officials said violators faced strict penalties, including heavy fines, vehicle seizure and cancellation of driving licences. Public awareness campaigns were also carried out to discourage people from driving under the influence.

To support commuters, police directed cab and auto drivers to operate without refusing passengers or charging excess fares on New Year’s Eve, warning of legal action for violations under the Motor Vehicles Act.
