A 48-year-old tailor from Moghalpura, Hyderabad narrowly avoided losing Rs 1.18 lakh on September 11, 2025. He fell for a scam involving a malicious APK file named “RTO CHALLAN” sent via WhatsApp. After installing it, fraudsters gained access to his phone and intercepted his banking OTPs, resulting in Rs 95,239 being charged to his credit card.
Police acted quickly, removing the malware and canceling fraudulent purchases made on platforms like Flipkart, Amazon, and Myntra. The tailor had saved card details on these sites, which the criminals exploited.
Another victim, a 35-year-old tech professional from Ashok Nagar, was also targeted. Police blocked fraudulent orders totaling Rs 23,532 in this case as well. Cybercrime units are warning people to avoid downloading APK files from unknown sources shared through WhatsApp, SMS, or social media.
