Hyderabad: On Wednesday, Telangana BJP President N Ramchander Rao claimed that the Congress government’s poor management is causing a fake shortage of urea for farmers in the state.
During a press meeting, Rao criticized the Revanth Reddy government for misleading farmers with false claims about insufficient urea supply from the Centre. He accused the state government of hiding facts and wrongly blaming the Modi government for political gain. This misinformation, according to Rao, leads farmers to stockpile more than needed.
Rao challenged Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageshwara Rao to debate the urea supply issue. He asserted that the central government provided more urea than needed. For the Rabi season 2024-2025, the Centre sent 12.47 Lakh Metric Tons (LMT) against the state’s demand of 9.87 LMT. The state sold 10.43 LMT and had a leftover stock of 2.04 LMT by March 2025, which wasn’t reported.
For the Kharif season, beginning April 25, the state held a buffer of 7.22 LMT. Until Wednesday, the Centre delivered 8.30 LMT, while the state required 9.80 LMT.
Rao emphasized that the Modi government supports farmers with a Rs 1.40 lakh crore subsidy on fertilizers to boost productivity. He mentioned that technical issues at the Ramagundam fertilizer plant had been fixed, and 50,000 additional metric tons of urea would soon arrive in Telangana.
Rao questioned the need for extra urea in Khammam district, which used only 3,200 MT last year. He also criticized the Congress party for not nominating a BC leader as Vice President, questioning their sincerity towards Backward Classes. He accused them of using BCs merely as a vote bank.
