3,899 km of lines to go underground across four metro zones; telecom providers to participate through cost-sharing
Hyderabad, November 2, 2025 – The Telangana government has approved a massive Rs.4,051 crore project to convert overhead electricity lines to underground cabling across Hyderabad’s four metro zones, transforming the city’s power distribution infrastructure.
Project Scope
TGSPDCL (Telangana State Power Distribution Company Limited) will shift 3,899 km of overhead lines to underground cables, covering:
- 33kV lines
- 11kV lines
- LT (Low Tension) lines
Coverage Areas
The project will be implemented across four key metro zones:
- Banjara Hills
- Secunderabad
- Hyderabad Central
- Hyderabad South
These zones represent Hyderabad’s most developed and densely populated areas, where overhead lines create visual clutter and are vulnerable to weather-related disruptions.
Funding Mechanism
The project will be funded through TGSPDCL’s internal funds or borrowing, eliminating the need for immediate budgetary allocation while allowing the utility to recover costs through tariffs over time.
Multi-Utility Corridor
In a collaborative approach, telecom/internet service providers and T-Fiber will participate in the underground cabling initiative through cost-sharing arrangements.
This multi-utility corridor approach will:
- Reduce overall project costs through shared infrastructure
- Minimize future road digging and disruption
- Create a unified underground utility network
- Improve service reliability for both power and telecom
Benefits
The underground cabling project will deliver:
- Aesthetic improvement by eliminating overhead wires
- Enhanced reliability with reduced weather-related outages
- Improved safety by removing exposed electrical lines
- Better urban landscape for premium areas
- Reduced maintenance costs in the long term
- Lower power theft opportunities
Part of Larger Vision
This initiative aligns with the recently announced Rs.14,725 crore underground electricity and multi-utility cable system for expanded GHMC areas, demonstrating the government’s commitment to modernizing Hyderabad’s infrastructure.
With 3,899 km of lines going underground, Hyderabad will join global cities with modern, invisible utility infrastructure, significantly enhancing its appearance and reliability.
