Disastrous Consequences of Unseasonal Rains

Unseasonal rains hit the erstwhile Karimnagar district from Saturday evening to Sunday morning, causing disruptions in normal life and damaging crops. The hailstones were larger than pebbles, damaging rice, maize, and sesame crops, as well as mango orchards. Farmers are worried about the extent of crop damage across hundreds of acres in the combined district. The agriculture department officials are preparing crop loss estimates.

The strong winds uprooted trees in many places, and power supply was interrupted in several areas due to two days of thunder and lightning in Karimnagar. The Sircilla district Collector has been directed to submit a report on the crop damage due to rains by Municipal Administration Minister KTR. The Collectors of Karimnagar, Rajanna Sircilla, Peddapalli, and Jagtial districts were asked for crop damage details by Civil Supplies Minister Gangula Kamalakar and Welfare Minister Koppula Eshwar.

The highest rainfall of 7.63 cm was recorded in Huzurabad in Karimnagar district, followed by 7.23 cm in Chigurumamidi mandal and 6.6 cm in Indurthi. On Saturday evening to Sunday morning, 3.20 cm of rainfall was recorded in Karimnagar district, 2.34 in Rajanna Sircilla district, 2.33 in Peddapalli district, and 1.70 cm in Jagtial district.

The preliminary estimate suggests that about 10 percent of the 2,54,000 acres of paddy cultivated will face crop loss due to the hailstorm. Paddy crops were entirely damaged in 8,500 to 9250 acres, and the complete loss could be estimated in two or three days. Officials estimate that 8,512 acres of maize crop were damaged, along with 450 acres of mango and 4948 acres of paddy, tomato, chilli, and other vegetable crops in various villages of Gangadhara mandal under Karimnagar division.
