Hyderabad: The Telangana Council of Higher Education (TGCHE) held an important meeting to change how English is taught in public universities. This meeting, which took place on Monday, aimed to revise the undergraduate General English syllabus starting from the 2025–26 academic year. It included the Chairs of Boards of Studies and Heads of English Departments from universities across Telangana.
Prof. V. Balakista Reddy, the Chairman of TGCHE, stressed the importance of making education fair and accessible. He highlighted a new approach focusing on skills for jobs and practical communication instead of just memorizing facts.
The updated syllabus follows the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 with a “light but tight” structure. It simplifies content while ensuring clarity and practical use. It also includes Telangana’s cultural and historical stories in the reading materials, making learning more engaging and local.
The TGCHE head announced a tech support system offering over 200 pages of free PDF reading materials for students. Audio clips recorded by teachers will help with pronunciation and spoken English. Teacher training sessions will be available on the T-SAT Network, covering teaching methods, digital tools, and assessment techniques.
The syllabus focuses on the four main English skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. These skills will be strengthened with grammar and vocabulary. Everything will be part of an integrated learning plan. Model question papers will also be created to help with exams and study.
The new syllabus stands out for its clear instructional design. Experienced faculty will prepare lessons in a step-by-step way, similar to problem-solving methods, making learning easier and more organized.
Prof. Reddy mentioned that these changes aim to make education more democratic and accessible to students throughout Telangana. The curriculum connects learning with real-life situations, including workplaces and digital communication.
The meeting’s goal was not only to plan the changes but also to get insights from subject experts. Through these reforms, TGCHE shows its dedication to updating education while keeping it culturally relevant and accessible to all.
