Hyderabad: The city’s traffic police have increased efforts to catch drunk drivers by conducting surprise checks during the day across key areas on Wednesday. This action targets the growing issue of daytime drunk driving, especially among school bus and commercial vehicle drivers.
The traffic police aim to boost road safety awareness and tackle the rise in alcohol consumption among drivers of two-wheelers, four-wheelers, and transport vehicles during the day. Recent incidents show that many accidents occur due to daytime drinking, challenging the belief that drunk driving is mainly a nighttime problem.
V Chandra Kumar, Assistant Commissioner of Police, South East Zone, mentioned that these checks are taking place at accident-prone spots throughout the city. They are organized strategically to avoid causing traffic congestion, ensuring traffic flows smoothly.
Drivers caught intoxicated will face charges under the Motor Vehicles Act and appear before the courts. Penalties include heavy fines, possible jail time, and suspension of driving licenses, either temporarily or permanently.
The Hyderabad Traffic Police emphasize that drunk driving is a serious crime, risking the lives of both the offender and other road users. They plan to maintain regular checks both day and night to ensure public safety.
Police urge drivers to avoid drinking and driving and cooperate with the traffic police to enhance road safety.
