Pakistan’s National Assembly has approved a resolution to file a judicial reference against Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial for alleged misconduct. The government will form a five-member parliamentary committee to prepare and file the reference against Supreme Court judges. The reference will be sent to the President by the National Assembly Speaker. A legal team is working on the issue.

The ruling coalition staged a demonstration outside the Supreme Court to protest against recent rulings of the judiciary where they allegedly provided blanket relief to former prime minister Imran Khan in several cases. The Shehbaz Sharif government will file a reference in the National Assembly by a resolution, sources added.

Last month, a local lawyer filed a reference against the Chief Justice in the Supreme Judicial Council for misconduct, based on the Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa elections case.
