The Indian government has summoned the High Commissioner of Canada to express concerns regarding recent actions by Khalistani supporters and extremists in Canada. The government has sought an explanation from Canada on how such elements were allowed, in the presence of police, to breach the security of the diplomatic mission and consulates. Reports indicate that hundreds of protesters held demonstrations with Khalistani flags in front of the Indian consulate in Vancouver. The Ministry of External Affairs expects the Canadian government to take all steps necessary to ensure the safety of Indian diplomats and the security of diplomatic premises. Canada’s foreign ministry has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of Indian diplomatic missions and is in contact with Indian diplomatic officials regarding the protests. An event attended by the Indian envoy to Canada was also cancelled after violent protests by Khalistani supporters, during which an Indian-origin journalist was assaulted by protesters.
