Pakistan’s army chief, General Asim Munir, has vowed to take action against those who targeted military installations during recent protests. The announcement was made during a Special Corps Commanders Conference (CCC) in Rawalpindi, where top generals condemned “politically motivated and instigated incidents” against military installations and public and private properties. The army believes the attacks were part of a “well-coordinated arson plan” and has warned it will no longer exercise restraint against those who launch attacks on military installations. The commanders also called on the government to punish violators of social media rules and regulations.

The attacks on army installations followed the arrest last week of former prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief, Imran Khan. PTI cadres launched protests demanding his release, attacking army installations, burning public property and fighting with the police. Khan was arrested for his alleged involvement in the Al Qadir trust case, but the Supreme Court and the Islamabad High Court released him on protective bail, which expired on Tuesday.

A CNN-News18 report claimed the recent events have split the Pakistan Army, with highly-placed military officials unhappy over how COAS Munir reacted to the protests.
