Hyderabad: Around 100 stray dogs were reportedly poisoned in Yacharam village, leading to a police case against a sarpanch and two others, according to authorities on Wednesday, January 21.
This event follows the deaths of nearly 500 stray dogs in various Telangana districts since January 6.
An animal activist from the Stray Animal Foundation of India reported that the dogs were poisoned on January 19. The Yacharam Police filed charges under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act against the sarpanch, a secretary, and a ward member on Tuesday.
Though the complaint stated 100 dogs were killed, initial investigations suggest the number is closer to 50. Further inquiries are ongoing, and efforts to locate the dog carcasses are underway.
Previously, police in Hanamkonda district charged nine individuals, including two female sarpanches and their spouses, for allegedly killing about 300 stray dogs in Shayampet and Arepally villages.
In a separate case, approximately 200 stray dogs were killed in Kamareddy district. Six people, including five sarpanches, face charges for their alleged roles.
It is believed that some local representatives carried out these acts to address the stray dog problem, fulfilling election promises made before the December gram panchayat elections.
