The Telangana government is preparing for significant changes in its political structure, with a cabinet expansion and a possible change in the Legislative Assembly Speaker position on the horizon. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy met with Congress general secretary K C Venugopal on Tuesday evening to discuss the proposed changes. Venugopal is scheduled to meet Telangana in-charge Meenakshi Natarajan and Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee president Mahesh Kumar Goud to finalize the decisions. Current Speaker Gaddam Prasad is reportedly being considered for inclusion in the cabinet expansion, which would necessitate the appointment of a new Speaker ahead of the assembly sessions starting from September 7th.
Among the leaders in the national capital, Minister Konda Surekha has emerged as a central figure of discussion, though she has not yet met any senior leaders. Her position in the cabinet remains uncertain following controversies involving public statements made by her daughter Sushmitha against the Chief Minister and alleged conduct issues related to her Officer on Special Duty, Sumanth. The Chief Minister has reportedly presented a strong case to the high command regarding these matters, highlighting concerns about damage to the party’s image. Other leaders under discussion include Chinnareddy, Thummala Nageshwar Rao, Uttam Kumar Reddy, Bhatti Vikramarka, and Komatireddy Rajagopal Reddy, who may finally be accommodated in the cabinet.
The proposed changes have brought to the surface ongoing tensions within the party regarding representation of different social groups. Backward Class leaders have been pressing the AICC leadership for fair and proportional representation to reflect their electoral significance, expressing concerns over what they perceive as excessive concentration of executive power among Reddy community leaders. Party sources indicate that these underlying currents have been present between TPCC president Mahesh Kumar Goud and CM Revanth Reddy for an extended period.
The Congress leadership in New Delhi faces the challenge of balancing representation between different communities while honouring long-pending commitments. Party sources have confirmed that the high command is determined to ensure that representation in the cabinet and government reflects a strong commitment to social justice. The final decisions on cabinet expansion and the Speaker’s position are expected to be announced shortly, with clarity anticipated on the roles of key leaders including Konda Surekha, Chinnareddy, and Rajagopal Reddy.
