The Krishna Drinking Water Supply Scheme Phase-2, which supplies drinking water to Hyderabad, saw a major water leakage after an air valve was accidentally destroyed. Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board officials contained the leak quickly. They worked on a war footing and finished the repairs in just five hours, restoring the drinking water supply.
The incident took place at around 4 AM near Uppal Bagayath, at pillar number 813 of the Nagole Metro Station. The air valve system of the Krishna Phase-2 pipeline is installed about 20 feet from the main road. A car hit the iron protection fence built around it with great force. The collision damaged the fence and completely destroyed the air valve, causing heavy water leakage.
Alert Water Board transmission officials acted immediately after the accident. They stopped the relevant pumps and controlled the flow of water. On learning about the incident, Water Board Managing Director K. Ashok Reddy directed officials to begin repair work at once. Officials from the Transmission, Operations and Maintenance departments worked together to repair the damaged air valve and carry out the necessary restoration work.
Given the severity of the accident, officials and technical staff moved quickly. They arranged the required machinery, equipment and technical personnel, and carried out repairs continuously. The damaged air valve system was restored in five hours, which fully stopped the leakage. The pipeline was then brought back into use, and drinking water supply to the affected areas resumed.
The Water Board had given special priority to uninterrupted drinking water supply for city residents during the festival period. Although the unexpected accident disrupted the supply system, officials and staff worked continuously in the field without regard to the festival. They completed the repairs on time and kept the interruption in supply to a minimum.
Ashok Reddy congratulated the officials, engineers and technical staff of the Transmission, Operations and Maintenance departments for responding immediately and completing the work in record time with close coordination. He said that putting people’s needs first during the festival and performing duties with dedication was commendable. He advised officials and staff to show the same alertness, coordination and swift response in emergencies. “The Water Board’s primary priority is to continuously provide drinking water to the people, and officials and staff should always be ready to promptly resolve any unforeseen technical issues in the supply systems,” the MD said.
