Sweet shops across Hyderabad were found selling expired sweets, operating without valid Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) licences and preparing sweets in unhygienic conditions during the Dasara festive season. The Telangana Safe Food Wing and enforcement officials carried out the inspections.
A total of twelve teams conducted the checks at sweet shops in the city. The drive comes at a time when demand for sweets typically rises, as people buy them for celebrations and offerings.
Officials found expired sweets being mixed into fresh batches at some shops. This practice put customers at risk of consuming unsafe food during the festival period.
The teams also found peanuts and sweets showing signs of insect infestation and fungal growth being kept for sale. Several shops were also found to be preparing sweets in unhygienic conditions.
Authorities said some shops would be closed, while others would receive show-cause notices or improvement notices. The expired sweets found during the inspections would be discarded.
Further details from TGSAFE on the inspections and the action taken against violators are awaited.
