The Telangana Standards Authority for Food and Essential Drugs (TG SAFE) suspended the FSSAI licences of 14 restaurants in Hyderabad on Saturday. The action followed a special food safety drive across the Golconda and Charminar zones. Officials ordered the establishments to stop operations immediately.
22 enforcement teams carried out the inspections. The teams included Food Safety Officers and police personnel. Apart from the suspensions, eight establishments received show-cause notices.
Officials found unhygienic kitchens, cockroach and housefly infestations, rat droppings, rotten vegetables and expired food articles. Some kitchens had live cats, cockroaches and rat droppings. Food articles were stored improperly, and raw meat and vegetarian food were kept together in some places.
Inspectors also reported fungal contamination of vegetables and the repeated use of cooking oil. Several kitchens had greasy chimneys, damaged flooring, stagnant water and poor drainage. Food handlers were working without hairnets and aprons.
