The Telangana Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has arrested Banjara Hills Sub-Inspector (SI) Vijay in Hyderabad for allegedly demanding a ₹10 lakh bribe. The officer is accused of seeking the money from the owner of Fortune 99 Homes to avoid arresting him in a cheating case.
According to the ACB, the complainant could not pay the amount demanded by the SI. He was then arrested in the cheating case. However, a court rejected the police plea seeking his remand and granted him bail.
After the complainant secured bail, the SI allegedly pressured him again to pay money. The demand was reportedly made in exchange for protection from arrest in other cases linked to him.
The complainant offered ₹2 lakh to the officer. He then approached the ACB and submitted evidence of the alleged demand.
Based on the complaint and the evidence, the ACB registered a case and arrested SI Vijay. The bureau has started a probe to examine the possible involvement of other officials in the matter.
The ACB has stated that demanding a bribe is an offence under the Prevention of Corruption Act, even if the money is not accepted.
