Members of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) organized a mock assembly session at Telangana Bhavan on Saturday, September 12, following the suspension of 22 party MLAs from the state assembly. The suspended legislators, including working president KT Rama Rao, were barred from attending the remainder of the monsoon session. Former minister Talasani Srinivas Yadav assumed the role of Chief Minister during the mock proceedings and directed sharp criticism at Chief Minister Revanth Reddy over the removal of Konda Surekha from the cabinet.
The suspension of BRS MLAs took place on September 9 after they stormed into the Well of the House raising slogans demanding justice. The legislators sought a debate on alleged police excess against women party members and objectionable remarks made by Congress MLA Veerlapally Shankar about party chief K Chandrasekhar Rao’s health. Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar ordered the suspension after Legislative Affairs Minister D Sridhar Babu moved a motion, as the BRS members refused to return to their seats despite repeated appeals from the Speaker, Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka and other officials.
Two BRS MLCs, Tata Madhusudan and Naveen Kumar Reddy, faced separate action on September 8 when they were arrested and suspended from the Legislative Council over alleged derogatory comments against the Speaker. The party later issued an apology for the remarks. The series of suspensions prompted the opposition party to stage the mock assembly as a form of protest against what they termed as undemocratic actions by the ruling dispensation.
During the mock session, Zaheerabad MLA Manik Rao occupied the Speaker’s chair while BRS legislators recreated assembly proceedings. The participating members held placards highlighting public issues they claimed the Congress government was deliberately avoiding in the actual House discussions. The demonstration aimed to draw attention to what the party described as the ruling party’s failure to address critical matters affecting the state’s population.
Playing the Chief Minister’s role, Talasani made satirical remarks about Konda Surekha’s removal from the cabinet, stating that he went to Delhi for three days and returned after having her removed. He referenced his background as a Backward Class member who became Chief Minister, in an apparent mockery of the actual political developments. Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla had earlier accepted Revanth Reddy’s recommendation to drop Surekha from the Telangana cabinet this month.
Talasani also targeted the Congress government’s 100-day guarantee promises, sarcastically questioning which specific 100 days were meant for implementation. He added remarks about troubles with authorities in Delhi, continuing the satirical tone of the mock assembly. The event was attended by senior BRS leaders, MLAs, and MLCs who participated in the symbolic protest against their suspension from the official legislative proceedings.
