DCA seizes Ayurvedic medicines and steroids in Telangana, labeling them as 'misleading'

The Telangana State Drugs Control Administration seized Ayurvedic medicines and one Allopathic formulation for making misleading claims through advertisements. The seized items included ‘Khadirarishta’ for tumours, ‘Ekangveer Ras’ for paralysis, ‘Simhadi Guggulu’ for rheumatism and tumours, Stonil 24 tablets for kidney stones, Ayur Phala Neem Leaf Powder for fever, and Diclodan Forte tablets for fever.

These claims violate the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954, which prohibits advertising certain drugs for the treatment of specific diseases. The seizures were made in various locations like Khammam, Bachupally, Toopran, Secunderabad, and Nizamabad. Those who make misleading drug advertisements can face imprisonment or fines under the Act.

DCA also conducted raids on unlicensed clinics and seized illegally stocked drugs in districts like Medchal-Malkajgiri, Vikarabad, and Rangareddy. The raids uncovered higher generation antibiotics and steroids at these clinics. Misuse of antibiotics and steroids can have severe health consequences, including Antimicrobial Resistance and various physical and mental health issues.

Wholesalers and dealers supplying medicines to unqualified persons without proper licenses can also face punishment under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act. In a separate raid, officials seized an overpriced ointment called ‘Mupima Ointment 5gm’ in Sangareddy District for violating price control regulations. The product’s MRP exceeded the ceiling price set by the Central Government, leading to a seizure worth Rs 71,300.
