India’s External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, is going on a nine-day trip to South America. He will visit Guyana, Panama, Colombia, and the Dominican Republic. On Thursday, Jaishankar said that India is considering participating in the meeting of Special Envoys on Afghanistan, which will be hosted by UN chief Antonio Guterres in Doha on May 1 and 2. The purpose of the meeting is to reinvigorate international engagement around common objectives for a durable way forward on the situation in Afghanistan. The discussions will be held behind closed doors.

Before his trip to South America, Jaishankar met with Guterres in New York to discuss the situation in Sudan. The UN Secretary-General aims to advance an approach based on pragmatism and principles, combined with strategic patience, to identify parameters for creative, flexible, principled, and constructive engagement. The meeting in Doha is urgent to advance this approach.
