A new Climate Trends study report warns that El Niño conditions could bring summer-like heat as early as February 2027. The report says El Niño is expected to peak by the end of 2026. Estimates suggest its influence may continue into 2027, raising the chances of scorching heatwaves early in the year.
The report also points to a sharp rainfall shortage in the Telugu states. Telangana has recorded an 18% rainfall deficit, while Andhra Pradesh has recorded a 25% deficit. Across the country, 44% of districts face a severe rainfall shortage. The study notes that August 2026 was recorded as the hottest month since 1901.
A warm winter is adding pressure on rabi crops, according to the report. Groundwater levels are declining, and reservoirs face water scarcity. These conditions pose a threat to farming in the region.
The rainfall shortage has already affected the area under rice, sugarcane and cotton cultivation. The report warns of the risk of severe losses to the agriculture sector due to droughts and water shortages.
The Climate Trends report states that El Niño is expected to peak by the end of 2026, with its influence possibly continuing into 2027.
