Hyderabad: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD-Hyderabad) predicts light to moderate rain for the next week and warns of heavy rain in Telangana over the next two days. In response, the Health Department released a health advisory on Sunday, urging the public to take safety precautions.
The advisory emphasizes that the combination of lower temperatures and higher humidity during this period can lead to an increase in seasonal illnesses. These include vector-borne, waterborne, and airborne diseases.
To protect against mosquito-borne diseases like Malaria, Dengue, and Chikungunya, residents should use mosquito nets or screens on doors and windows. It’s also important to cover beds with mosquito nets and use repellents. To prevent mosquito breeding, keep domestic drains clear of stagnant water and cover septic tanks with mesh. The department suggests observing a ‘Friday-Dry Day’ weekly to eliminate standing water around homes.
To avoid waterborne diseases such as Acute Gastroenteritis, Jaundice, and Typhoid, people are advised to drink boiled or filtered water and wash hands thoroughly, especially before meals. Avoid eating stale food from outside.
For airborne diseases like viral fevers and Influenza, it is recommended to avoid handshakes when sick. Regular use of hand sanitizers is important, and a handkerchief should be used when sneezing or coughing. If symptoms like fever, headache, sore throat, and body aches appear, individuals should visit nearby government health centers. In emergencies, dial 108 for ambulance services.
The government has set up special arrangements in public health facilities, including beds, IV fluids, and essential medicines. Director of Health Dr. Ravinder Nayak confirmed that medicines and ORS sachets are available with Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs), Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs), and Anganwadi workers for emergencies.
