High Court directs Election Commission to take action against Konda Surekha for code violation

Sravan Dasoju, spokesperson for the BRS party, filed a writ in the Telangana High Court against Minister Konda Surekha for making derogatory comments about K Tarakarama Rao (KTR), MLA and BRS working president. The comments were made during a press conference in Warangal, violating the model code of conduct. Dasoju claimed that Surekha’s comments damaged the reputation of the BRS party and KTR.

Surekha accused KTR of being involved in a phone-tapping case and claimed he would be sent to jail without any evidence. Dasoju argued that Surekha’s statements were meant to deceive the public and gain votes in the upcoming elections. He also stated that Surekha violated Election Commission guidelines by speaking against KTR instead of focusing on issues in her constituency.

Dasoju’s complaint to the Election Commission was forwarded to the GHMC commissioner/district election officer, who did not have jurisdiction over the matter. He requested the court to direct the Chief Election Commissioner to prevent Surekha from making defamatory remarks against KTR or any BRS leader. The case is expected to be heard by a division bench soon.

In a separate matter, the Telangana High Court took note of a news report about debris being dumped in Jalpally and Umdasagar lakes in the Old City. Land rates have increased due to Metro project works, leading to illegal dumping in the lakes by miscreants and land grabbers. Residents have raised concerns about the lack of action against those responsible.

Justice M G Priyadarsini of the THC sent a letter to the Chief Justice highlighting the illegal construction in water bodies across the city, which is causing harm to the lakes. The letter emphasized the importance of protecting water bodies as a basic source of life and livelihood for citizens. Various government officials and agencies have been named as respondents in the case, which will be heard by the Chief Justice bench.
