The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) will launch its Dial-a-Green Tanker service on November 1. The service will supply treated wastewater for construction and other non-drinking uses. The move comes as the city prepares for a possible water crisis linked to El Niño.

The service aims to cut the use of drinking water and groundwater in construction, industrial activities, parks and landscaping. The board is acting ahead of possible water shortages in the summer. The initiative follows Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy’s directions to prepare for the season, amid concerns over the impact of El Niño and pressure on the Singur and Manjeera reservoirs.

The board is building a dedicated digital platform for online bookings and tanker tracking. Managing Director Ashok Reddy said the platform should be ready within seven to 10 days. The board has not yet announced the booking website, contact number, tariff or detailed procedure for consumers.

The board has set an initial target of using 100 million litres per day (MLD) of treated wastewater for non-drinking purposes. Ashok Reddy met representatives of the Confederation of Real Estate Developers’ Associations of India (CREDAI), the National Real Estate Development Council (NAREDCO) and the Telangana Builders Federation (TBF). He urged the construction sector and industries to use treated water from sewage treatment plants (STPs) instead of drinking water and groundwater.

So far, the board has registered 51 private STPs. It has preliminarily identified a surplus of around 1.5 MLD of treated water from these facilities. Officials are examining whether treated water can be supplied to construction sites through tankers and pipelines from nearby STPs. Guidelines on transportation costs, water quality standards and supply arrangements are being prepared.

The service is planned mainly for construction, industrial and landscaping needs. The board is yet to disclose the booking process, charges, delivery areas and eligibility criteria. Consumers and construction firms will need to check the board’s official announcements for these details before booking.
