Rs.13,000 crore project with 250 km in AP; land acquisition with 100-meter width underway
Amaravati, November 20, 2025 – A Greenfield High-Speed Corridor connecting Hyderabad to Bengaluru is set to be constructed, which will run parallel to the existing National Highway-44 and reduce travel time between the two major cities to just 5 hours.
The corridor will pass through Kurnool, Nandyal, Anantapur, and Sri Satya Sai districts in Andhra Pradesh. The project is being developed as a parallel alternative to the existing Hyderabad-Bengaluru National Highway-44, with a Detailed Project Report (DPR) currently being prepared.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) through its MORTH (Ministry of Road Transport and Highways) Alignment Appraisal Committee has approved one alignment for this project.
Travel Time Reduced to 5 Hours
Currently, traveling from Hyderabad to Bengaluru via the existing NH-44 takes 8-9 hours. The new high-speed corridor will be designed for vehicles traveling at 120 km/h, enabling passengers to reach their destination in just 5 hours.
Project Specifications
The Hyderabad-Bengaluru Highway-44 will cover:
- Telangana: 210 km
- Andhra Pradesh: 260 km
- Karnataka: 106 km
- Total length: 576 km
The new high-speed corridor will run 10-15 km parallel to the existing NH-44 throughout its stretch.
Six to Eight Lane Highway
The existing NH-44 is being expanded from four lanes to six lanes parallel to accommodate growing traffic. However, due to increasing traffic from Kurnool, Anantapur, and surrounding urban and residential areas, expansion has become difficult. With these challenges, the decision has been made to construct a new Greenfield Corridor.
Access-Controlled Design
Only a limited number of vehicles will be allowed entry and exit on this highway. The corridor will have controlled entry and exit points, with vehicles able to cross the corridor only at designated N-Pass trumpet interchanges. The entire corridor will feature four to six meters of median with DPI Advanced Traffic Management System implementation.
Land Acquisition with 100-Meter Width
For this project, the Union Ministry is preparing three alignments, with land acquisition planned at 100-meter width. Within this limit, the high-speed corridor construction in AP is estimated at Rs.13,000 crore.
In three alignments, one is a definite alignment whose full extent will be determined. The deadline for DPR preparation has been set for February next year, with NHAI given the deadline.
