The Hyderabad-Bijapur National Highway has come under severe criticism for its dangerous road alignment, with Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy expressing serious concerns during his recent visit to Chevella. The minister highlighted that a mere 46-kilometer stretch of the highway contains an alarming 30 turns, a construction pattern he claims is unprecedented anywhere else in the country. He questioned the role of NHAI officials in approving such hazardous road design and announced plans to conduct a comprehensive review of the road works with relevant department officials.
Motorists traveling on this route face daily torment due to the poorly designed infrastructure. A frustrated commuter from Moinabad revealed that journeys which should take fifteen minutes now consume an entire hour. The continuous traffic congestion has become a regular nightmare for thousands of daily travelers who depend on this crucial arterial road. The highway begins at Tipu Khan Bridge near Langar House in Hyderabad and extends through multiple suburban areas, carrying heavy vehicular load throughout the day.
Current traffic estimates indicate that at least 5,000 vehicles travel from the suburbs to Moinabad every hour, while approximately 2,000 vehicles ply between Moinabad and Manneguda in Vikarabad district. Despite ongoing expansion work from Moinabad to Manneguda, for which Rs 980 crores is being spent, the problematic turns remain unaddressed. The NHAI’s apparent indifference to this critical safety issue has become a major topic of discussion among local residents and regular commuters.
Traffic bottlenecks plague several key intersections along the route, causing severe delays and frustration. Major problem areas include the Telangana Police Academy intersection, Bandlaguda Jagir, GVK, Aziznagar Old Road, Vidya Jyothi College, NKpalli intersection, Himayatnagar, Amlapur, and Moinabad intersections. The Outer Ring Road interchanges also contribute significantly to the daily traffic chaos experienced by commuters on this corridor.
The traffic management situation has deteriorated further due to administrative shortcomings. The Future City Commissionerate operates with only four traffic police stations, covering Moinabad, Chevella, Shankarpally, and Shabad areas. The national highway from Tipu Khan Bridge to Moinabad center falls under the supervision of Narsingi, Rajendranagar, and Chevella traffic police. Local residents complain that traffic personnel focus more on issuing challans than on actively managing and clearing traffic jams when they occur.
The shortage of staff and the delay in establishing additional traffic police stations continue to worsen the situation. Plans to set up a dedicated traffic police station in Moinabad remain stalled, with Shankarpally facing similar delays. The expansion of traffic infrastructure and personnel deployment requires immediate attention from authorities to address the growing concerns of daily commuters who navigate this increasingly hazardous route.
