Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Assets Protection Agency (HYDRAA) continued checking furniture shops for fire safety issues for the second consecutive day. On January 30th, they sealed six shops across the city.
Officials are worried as many cellars have been turned into storage spaces containing chemicals, paint cans, and materials for making furniture. Many of these buildings don’t have the necessary permits or fire safety certificates. Essential safety equipment like fire extinguishers, automatic water sprinklers, and smoke detectors were missing from these shops.
On Friday, six shops were closed, including Anu Furniture at Kompally crossroads, Royal Oak Furniture on PV Narasimha Rao Expressway in Attapur, Bantia Furniture in Uppal Nagole, and Anu Furniture Showroom in Nacharam.
At Looking Good Furniture in Gachibowli, the cellar was packed with flammable items like mattresses, batteries, and paint. The ramps were blocked by stock, and the building lacked fire permits, according to HYDRAA.
This action follows a tragic fire at Batcha Furniture shop in Nampally on January 24th, which resulted in the deaths of five people, including two children and a woman.
HYDRAA has intensified its efforts to ensure safety compliance by conducting joint inspections with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), fire, and electricity officials.
On Thursday, authorities also sealed Neerus showroom in Jubilee Hills Rd No 36 and Rahim and Mannan Estates Standard Furniture in Nampally.
