    The Delhi High Court rejected a challenge to Najma Akhtar’s selection as vice chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia. The court upheld a previous decision made by a single judge. The challenge had been made in March 2021, but the court dismissed it.

    The Delhi government has instructed the Services department to only follow directives approved by the responsible minister. This applies to all employees, and no directives will be given by the Chief Secretary or the Secretary (Services).

    The appeal against Akhtar’s appointment argued that one of the committee members did not meet the criterion of being prominent in higher education. It was also contended that the committee should have provided justifications for selecting Akhtar, and that the ministry of human resource development should not have suggested committee members.
