The Khairatabad Assembly seat has been formally declared vacant, clearing the way for a by-election in Hyderabad after the disqualification of former MLA Danam Nagender.
The Telangana Legislative Assembly issued a gazette notification on September 26, declaring Nagender disqualified under the anti-defection law. The notification says the disqualification took effect from April 23, 2024.
The move followed a Telangana High Court verdict on September 18. The court disqualified Nagender after he contested the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Secunderabad on a Congress ticket, despite having been elected to the Assembly on a BRS ticket.
Nagender challenged the High Court’s order in the Supreme Court. The apex court dismissed his challenge on September 24, leaving the disqualification in force.
With the vacancy formally notified, the process for a Khairatabad by-election can move ahead. The Election Commission will announce the polling date and schedule separately.
