A women’s hostel in Begumpet is under police scrutiny after investigators allegedly uncovered an organised egg collection racket operating from its premises. Police detained around 10 young women after a midnight raid at Ami Neeta Girls Hostel in Prakash Nagar on Thursday.
The raid was carried out jointly by the Begumpet police and the Malkajgiri Special Operations Team (SOT). Officers acted on information about suspected illegal activities at the facility, which appeared to be a regular residential accommodation for women.
Investigators are probing allegations that young women were brought to the hostel for egg extraction. The collected eggs were then allegedly supplied to fertility centres. Police suspect the operation had been running for nearly one year.
According to preliminary findings, women from different states were allegedly brought to the hostel, where their eggs were collected and sold. Police are trying to establish who arranged the procedures, how the women were recruited and who gained financially from the alleged transactions.
The probe has also widened. Police suspect that sperm samples may have been collected from some men at the premises. Officials are examining the evidence gathered during the search to determine whether this was part of the same alleged operation.
The women, who are from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Odisha, were taken in for questioning. Police are seeking to ascertain whether they came voluntarily, knew about the alleged procedures or were brought through intermediaries. Investigators will also examine possible links between the hostel operators, agents and fertility centres, and further action will follow based on the evidence collected.
