Nizam College Students in Hyderabad Protest for Essential Amenities in Girls' Hostel

Undergraduate students of Nizam College in Hyderabad held a protest on Wednesday, demanding better facilities in the girls’ hostel, specifically access to water. The students stated that they had been repeatedly approaching the college authorities for the past five months regarding the lack of drinking water in their hostel, but their concerns were not addressed. Frustrated with the lack of response, they organized a protest to express their dissatisfaction with the authorities.

The students highlighted that although their demand for a new hostel was met a year ago, they soon discovered that the new facility had multiple problems. Durga, a second-year student, shared that there has been a severe water crisis in the hostel for the past five months, and the food quality is also poor. Despite numerous complaints and appeals to the warden and authorities, their concerns were ignored. The students not only face issues in the hostel but also encounter other problems within the college. When they question the administration, they are told that the blame lies with the state government and scholarship issues.

Saraswathi, another student, explained that despite fighting for and securing the hostel, they have experienced days without water for drinking and bathing. This has led many girls to move to private hostels at great expense for maintaining menstrual hygiene. To cope with the lack of water, the students are forced to buy water cans for daily use in the hostel. The college officials claimed to have recently spent Rs 1 lakh to repair a motor, but the water problem remains unsolved. The students declared that their agitation will continue until they receive clear assurances regarding their raised concerns.

Later, the Abids police took some students into custody in order to restore traffic flow and clear roads as the protest had disrupted traffic in the area.
