Telangana has witnessed a significant surge in electric vehicle adoption, with purchases crossing 1.59 lakh units within a year, thanks to the state government’s GO41 subsidy scheme.

State Minister Ponnam Prabhakar announced that 1,59,304 vehicles have received EV subsidy support worth Rs 806.35 crore under this government order. The scheme has played a crucial role in accelerating the shift towards clean and sustainable transportation in the state.

The GO41 initiative was introduced to encourage citizens to adopt electric vehicles by providing substantial financial incentives. The overwhelming response demonstrates the growing awareness among Telangana residents about environmental conservation and the benefits of electric mobility.

In a parallel move to expand green transportation options, the state government issued GO 263, which authorizes the deployment of alternative fuel vehicles across new colonies outside the Outer Ring Road (ORR) limits.

Under GO 263, the state has authorized:

  • 10,000 CNG autos
  • 10,000 LPG autos
  • 25,000 retrofitted electric autos

This comprehensive approach aims to provide multiple eco-friendly transportation alternatives for residents in expanding urban areas. The authorization of retrofitted electric autos is particularly significant as it allows existing auto-rickshaw owners to convert their vehicles to electric power, reducing the financial burden of purchasing new vehicles.

The state government has also announced plans for its own departments to lead by example. Government departments will gradually shift to 20% EV usage, setting a benchmark for public sector adoption of electric vehicles.

This institutional commitment is expected to create additional demand for electric vehicles while demonstrating the government’s seriousness about reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable transportation.

The combined impact of GO41 and GO263 is expected to significantly reduce vehicular pollution in Telangana, particularly in Hyderabad and surrounding areas. The financial support provided through subsidies has made electric vehicles more affordable and accessible to a broader section of society.

The success of the EV subsidy scheme reflects Telangana’s commitment to environmental sustainability and its position as a progressive state in adopting clean energy solutions in the transportation sector.
