Pala Pitta to be main attraction at revamped Begumpet railway station

Hyderabad’s Begumpet railway station is getting a major upgrade and a new look. As part of the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS), the station has been transformed into a modern hub, blending convenience with Telangana’s cultural identity.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will virtually launch the revamped Begumpet station on May 22. Along with it, other stations in Karimnagar, Warangal, and across India will also be inaugurated under the same scheme.

The South Central Railway (SCR) oversaw the renovation, spending around ₹26.55 crore on the project. The station now features many passenger-friendly additions like spacious waiting areas, modern toilets, escalators, lifts, and improved accessibility for differently-abled passengers.

A key highlight of the renovation is the installation of the Indian Roller (Pala Pitta)Telangana’s State bird—as a symbolic centerpiece. This reflects the region’s natural and cultural heritage.

The station’s surroundings have also been beautified. New lighting systems, landscaped gardens, water features, and clear signage create a better travel experience for commuters.

In a unique move, the entire Begumpet station is operated by an all-women staff. From the station master to ticket clerks, RPF constables, and booking office personnel, women have been managing operations for over six years. A dedicated surveillance system has been installed to ensure the safety of female passengers.

The upgraded station now includes two lifts, four escalators, better platform shelters, and easy-to-read signs to guide travelers. Currently, Begumpet serves around 100 trains daily, with a rising footfall of 15,000 commuters. It is a key stop for several important and superfast trains from Mumbai and Pune, with 122 trains operating through the station.

Under the ABSS, a long-term master plan has been created to continue developing the station with modern facilities and services, aiming to make it a top-class railway hub in Telangana.
