A missile attack by the Houthis hit King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on Saturday. This tragic event resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people and injured over 300 more. Among those affected was Mohammad Yousuf Ali from Hyderabad, who was traveling with his family for Umrah. His sons sustained injuries and were hospitalized.
On Sunday, a second strike occurred, leading to another fatality. These incidents forced the airport to halt flights until mid-week, causing significant disruptions in travel to and from Saudi Arabia’s capital.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has not been seen publicly since early last week. Reports suggest he is being moved between secure palaces with bunkers, under the protection of a personally chosen security team.
The newspaper further reported that Saudi Arabia is experiencing a shortage of interceptor missiles. As a result, the country is seeking air-defense support from allies like Pakistan. This shortage is occurring amidst ongoing Houthi assaults on Saudi infrastructure and airports.
In response to the increased tensions, Saudi officials have issued a warning of a significant retaliation. US President Donald Trump labeled the attack on the airport as “unacceptable” and mentioned that the US might join in strikes against the Houthis. These missile strikes are part of a larger Houthi strategy targeting Saudi civilian and energy locations.
