August 13, 2025 — In a significant political development, the Supreme Court of India has struck down the nominations of Kodandaram Reddy and Ameer Ali Khan to the Telangana Legislative Council under the Governor’s quota.
The apex court’s decision came while hearing a petition filed by Sravan Dasoju and K. Satyanarayana, who had challenged the rejection of their nominations by the then Governor, Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan.
Fresh Nominations Put on Hold
The court ruled that any fresh nominations to the two vacant MLC seats will remain subject to its final verdict. This means no appointments can be made until the legal proceedings are fully concluded.
The matter has been posted for the next hearing on September 17, when the court is expected to examine further arguments and submissions from all parties involved.
Background of the Dispute
Under the Governor’s quota, a certain number of MLCs are nominated based on their contributions to literature, art, science, social service, or other public life sectors. The petitioners alleged that their nominations were rejected arbitrarily and without valid grounds by the former Governor, and that the subsequent appointments of Kodandaram Reddy and Ameer Ali Khan were unconstitutional.
The Supreme Court’s ruling has put a temporary pause on the political equation in the Legislative Council, with the two seats now in limbo until the court delivers its final judgment.
