AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has approached the Supreme Court with a writ petition and a review petition against the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The petitions raise concerns about how the exercise is being carried out.
Owaisi alleges that Election Commission decisions on the SIR were not taken collectively. He also claims that statutory forms were altered and that the rights of eligible voters are at risk. His plea asks the Court to issue directions to ensure compliance with the Representation of the People Act and related rules.
The review petition specifically targets the Court’s May 27, 2026 verdict, which upheld the Bihar SIR. Owaisi has sought a review of that ruling while continuing to oppose the revision process.
A bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant noted the petition on 14 October. The bench indicated that it would be listed along with similar challenges filed by Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge and other opposition leaders. The matter is expected to be taken up on 15 October.
Owaisi has linked the legal challenge to his party’s wider efforts. AIMIM provided ground-level assistance to people during the SIR, including an app for voters. The party is also pursuing alliances in Uttar Pradesh ahead of the assembly elections, with the aim of preventing a third BJP term in the state.
Owaisi has reiterated his opposition to the SIR despite the earlier Supreme Court ruling. His petitions seek directions that the revision follow the Representation of the People Act and its rules.
