The Telangana government has issued G.O.Ms.No. 135 to create a specialised police body for traffic management and road and rail safety. The new bureau, called the Telangana Traffic Management, Road & Rail Safety Bureau (TG-TMARS), is intended to address traffic congestion and road accidents across the state.
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, who chairs the State Road Safety Council, is leading the initiative. The reform shifts the focus towards scientific traffic planning, faster help for crash victims and modern policing of road and rail transport, alongside traffic enforcement.
TG-TMARS will be headquartered in Hyderabad and led by an officer of Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) or Inspector General of Police (IGP) rank. According to the details announced for the bureau, it will oversee traffic management across about 32,000 kilometres of roads and a vehicle fleet of around 1.8 crore registered vehicles.
The bureau will also oversee safety arrangements involving the Metro and railways. Its responsibilities will include traffic regulation and coordination across the state’s road network.
Under the plan, every police station will have a dedicated Road Crash Response Officer available around the clock. The officer will help accident victims during the critical period after a crash, commonly known as the golden hour.
Specialised Highway Patrol Units equipped with advanced cameras will monitor the Outer Ring Road and major highways. The order also provides for a dedicated Traffic Management Fund to support the bureau’s operations.
Forty per cent of traffic fine collections will be transferred to the fund for equipment, patrol vehicles and officer training, according to the government’s plan. G.O.Ms.No. 135 establishes TG-TMARS as the specialised body for traffic management and road and rail safety in Telangana.
